Right, so. What can you say about 2 tracks and then some noise? Except that this was exactly the kind of wackadoo shit we wanted from Aphex Twin (or AFX here) at this point, amongst remixes and Drukqs, waiting for some new material, and the two short 2-song EPs singles he released seemed to totes be that whatever we were craving, a mad rush of almost every style of Aphex mashed into quick and smooth blasts of electronica… Of these 2 “remixes” (put in quotes because, similar to most of the stuff on 26 mixes for cash – and one of these tracks reappears there – despite these being culled from other source material, it absolutely rings true of Richard D. James), the first one is the more herky jerky, the second the dancier, which makes it a good pair, with track one weirding you out with stop-start beats (like Windowlicker stuff) that you can’t quite nod your head to, then reminding you of the classic house direction Rephlex would return to around this time with the second track.
The 3rd track, despite being a recording of an image, works, oddly, as an interesting sound experiment. As in: you’ll probably claim to hear some purposeful beats or patterns until discovering that it’s just a translated signal.
Singles just whet your palate (wet…?), unless one track is truly all you need, and this is a worstest case of wanting more… and then slapped down by the static track at single’s end.
