Police Teeth – Real Size Monster Series

4 out of 5

A glorious mess of styles that, frankly, incites lip-curling “Whaaaa…”ness from the way the opening pseudo-screamo of ‘I Made Out With You Before You Were Cool’ – hardcore yelly guy and higher-pitched shouty guy who might be the same guy yelly shoutin’ about, like, life, bro, via a lot of “fucks” – gives way to, on track 3, freakin’ guitar pop, and later on… dub?  And still with the “fucks?”  But, huh, it’s damned passionate, and the blue collar lyrics admittedly trigger empathic nods from anyone that’s lived a day in the minimum-wage life spoken to, and Conrad Uno’s crisp, raw production allows the in-yer-face sharp playing of our dual guitarists, bassist, and drummer to really shine, and then once you’ve come around to the swirling mish-mash of distortion-, aggression-laden genres, Real Size Monster Series proves to be one of the most infectious and freakin’ catchy records made.  You become inured to all the swearing, as well, as part of the extreme worker-bee lyrical content, helped along by the beer-drinking, snarky-smile vibe hiding behind said content, as well as noting that there’s a vein of intelligence and thought feeding these rambles; they aren’t just angry soliloquies, but enthused calls to riot along… which you end up wanting to, bopping back and forth between head-nodding rhythms and foot stomping thrash as dictated by the genre hopping…

So, Police Teeth, I might have been the guy waiting for the next act to come on whilst you played your hearts at out whichever bar, rolling my eyes at your shouts and language, but by the end of the set I picked up a CD, and then the next time you came to town, you were the band I came to see.
