5 out of 5
Label: Big Wheel Recreation
Some very emo-pop-punk-lookin’ cover art, an emo-core label, and the name of the single can’t help but remind us of the emo-pop-punk band Simple Plan; I filed this single quite a bit at Tower Records, prior to actually listening to Piebald, and those impressions stuck with me. Acknowledging that they’d appeared on some notable hardcore labels in the past, and then they made the jump to SideOneDummy – a much more reliable output of quality punkers, in my mind – so, hey, I became a Piebald fan.
Coming back around to this frikkin’ single, which of course ends up being two amazing tracks. The A-side title track is electrifying Piebald, Travis Shettel rip-roaring through powerful lyrics building to that powerful chorus, with some amazingly layered production supporting the heck out of the pop hooks. B-Side You Wouldn’t Be A Piece Without Your Moustache should just be a joke track about moustaches – har-de-har we love joking about undernose fuzz – but, of course, the group twist-turns it into something else; something smart, that makes you chuckle at the subject matter but pump your fist and cheer along at the same time.
Guys, don’t look all emo next time so I can start to like your band sooner.
