La Colonie De Vacances – Gris Funk / Fa Niente, Maestro

3 out of 5

Label: Vicious Circle

Produced by: Pierre-Antoine Parois

Pretty straight forward electro punk from this collective of math rockers.

Gris Funk is the more disappointing out of the two tracks, but only because it comes from LCdV – who are generally breaking apart their compositions and piecing them back together in unusual ways, but are here doing a kind of DFA wiggle that’s straight out of the early 00s, emo-tinged vocals and all. That said, it’s not a bad song by any means, and certainly befitting of having ‘funk’ in its title, I just don’t know of anything here that would identify this as the band.

Fa Niente, Maestro is much more interesting, as the group takes to an instrumental post-rock loop, which they speed up and slow down to milk out some variations on the theme. This is much more in line with the collective’s experimentation, although it needs a stronger A-side to balance it out – this otherwise would be a great intro to something, or interstitial between somethings.

Ranked strictly in terms of the group’s slim discography, it’s definitely a lesser entry, but as standalone indie rock, it’s fine.
