J.K. – Acid Fiami

4 out of 5

Label: Weme Records

Produced by: J.K.

The production on this totally caught me off guard.

Juggling between some lite-IDM breaks and more clubby acid workouts, Jody Kendrick’s Acid Fiami has a lot of amazing sounds and beats, but… underwhelms? Initially. The production / mix on this is just really oddly organic sounding; really warm. And that initially doesn’t seem to sync with the pace, and the beats; you’re expecting the low end to hit more. But given the funny label artwork of a godzilla grasping a Roland synth, and Weme’s callout to this being particularly 90s sounding, I opened up to the production: that warmth is one of the listens most endearing qualities, really bringing out the funk in the bass and the smoothness of the production.

The lead-in tracks on both sides bang, with Club International Acid having some 00s-era Aphex vibes in the effects, and Mawnan Mash just a mix of really lovely, deviously layered beats and bass. The backup tracks (the title track on A; Alignment Beach on B) both land on some awesome melodies and unique sounds smooshed together into something very, very fun, they just each go on a bit too long for my tastes, geared more for looping than listening.
