Images of Goo – Images of Goo

3 out of 5

Label: Un Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi

Produced by: Images of Goo

The name of the band is Images of Goo, and each track is named, simply, ‘Image,’ and a sequential number. And that feels about right.

A duo of two experimental musicians, hanging around in other experimental projects and incarnating here, Images of Goo do a loose, organic improv thing of beats and electronic squiggles. Over the course of ten “images,” we transition from a very grooving, analog collab of percussion and bass to more psychedelic, softer beats, then, the album’s B-side finding a more electronic and chilled version of that, with touches of fuzzy vocals and warm ambience leading us to the final, tenth image, which circles back around to forefronted percussion, if a bit end-of-the-night jazz.

The ‘Goo’ of the group’s name is suggestive of this morphing nature, tracks very easily sliding into one another, though shaping up into distinct sounds each time. Images is also accurate: while we start pretty defined, the lines become blurry pretty soon, making the bulk of the album sound like sketches; ideas being drawn in real time, then page flipped for another. The generally short runtime prevents this from feeling like a drag, and though the notion that we rarely get to any defining moments prevents the album from feeling very impactful, or having a “sound,” it’s still an exciting enough – and definitely sonically interesting – listen.
