Ice Cream Man: Two Tramps (#34) – W. Maxwell Prince

These types of issues are, at this point, what I consider “bonus” issues of ICM: still fulfilling the one-shot horrors of the title, but a bit less esotheric (less, but not not esotheric), and with more of a focus on nodding to the lore. Sometimes those issues can annoy a bit, as they tend not to move the lore forward at this point, but sometimes they can be like Two Tramps – just fun ‘pauses’ in heavier stuff, with Prince rather on-the-nose pointing to the cyclical nature of his title.

Here, two travelin’ ‘bos who’ve been together for a few years ask each other the question What’s The Craziest Thing You’ve Ever Believed?, and then we get to see whether or not those crazy things are actually true. This is partially silly, then partially poetic, wrapped up by a “keep on movin’ and doin’ the same thing” theme, as visualized by the trains our two tramps ride to wherever, and perhaps driven by a familiar green eyed feller.

Martin Morazzo’s style feels so dialed in at this point, finding a rhythm that separates them from the fine-lined look of Quitely and the Jacen Burrows widescreen pace – I feel so comfortable in these issues now, fully managed by the artist, and Chris O’Halloran’s similarly confident, non-showy coloring.

So this issue may not add-to or advance much, but it is a perfect capture of the book’s overall themes and vibe.
