A very mini-comicy mini-comic, an apparently known quantity in Pittsburgh – and pretty durable, given that issue count! – written and drawn by Nate McDonough. ‘Grixly’ is black and white, featuring loosely- / verging-on-crudely-drawn slice-of-life-esque tales starring (presumably) the creator, and focusing on day-to-day obsessions, including comic collecting. (There is a longer thread of the latter across Grixly called Longboxes; one strip from that appears here.)
While Grixlys have no set format from what I can tell, this issue is all page-long strips, and most end in something like a punchline. McDonough’s style is of an appreciative “I could draw that!” quality, but the creator understands timing and framing – using a minimalist to always get a gag or thought across in a few panels.
I had a few smiles here; nothing felt obnoxious or overly “indie;” and one true laugh at a closing Belle & Sebastien joke. Color covers, thick paper stock.
Again, very mini-comicy, but I can understand being excited to support this if McDonough was my local comic person.
