Slim pickings.
I get it – Breakin’ Records tends to be very club-oriented in its jams, and favors old school beats in general: funky samples; lots of loops; body movin’ stuff. It’s made for actually spinning, maybe not so much listening. But I can get down with a groovy beat, and especially when I bear the imprint’s m.o. in mind, I can appreciate their output to a significant degree.
I’ll assume the naming convention here is another synth tribute; we can also assume my ears will never be sharp enough to tell you the difference. Regardless, the production is – it’s Ed – amazing: slickly mixed in samples; amazingly minimalist beats; precisely applied percussion. You’re just not getting very much on this single beyond the standout lead tune – the fast-paced Bang It! – and then some very repetitive jams. Like, even if you’re looping this while I’m acid-ed up and dancing, I feel like I’d be getting impatient.
Bang It! and the B-side opener, Drop That, are backed up by instrumentals. Bang It!’s BPM is such that the whole track lands – as per its name, it’s a banger. Drop That has a nice, PG-13 sample as it hook, and some excellent drum layering that comes out in the instrumental, but dang is it super limited overall, running through its playbook in about 30 seconds and then hanging on for 4:30 more. (The instrumental of this can obviously do nothing to fix that.)
Elsewhere, the A-side closes out with Doktor X, another good but highly repetitive beat, and the vinyl has a bonus bit of samples at the end which merit a smile, but aren’t music.
