DMX Krew – You Can’t Hide Your Love Re-mixes

3 out of 5

Label: Rephlex Records

Produced by: Ed DMX

Some old school bops from the late 90s era of DMX – his sincere take on 80s / 90s house and club tunes. The beats here are pretty solid; if you’re familiar with this style of DMX Krew, it might feel like you’re getting some filler here, as it’s all head-bobby but generic. Indeed, these remixes were a promo-only redo of – by my opinion – much better versions on a same-named EP, and when compared side-by-side, the originals have a bit more life and richness, making these seem not like remixes per se, but proto versions of the same tunes.

You Can’t Hide Your Dub is a slightly more low-end take of the title tune with a couple playful vocal hiccups, shifting the mood of the 80s pop original to something more strictly dancefloor; Inside Out’s “vocal mix” is appropriately named, though you’ve still got the original beat to vibe on; Who Got The Funk? (Re-Mix 80) shifts away from the video game bloops from the regular version and focus on the funk; and DMX Funk (R.E.M.I.X.) does something similar – shedding much of the “extras” of the track and giving us the core beat.

You can see the trend: these “remixes” are stripped down takes. And I can get the appeal of that, and on their own, are totally boppable, if generic amongst DMX Krew’s catalogue from the time.
