DMX Krew – Return To Jupiter

3 out of 5

Label: Gudu Records

Produced by: Ed DMX

Totally funky, but runs a bit long.

Ed DMX functioning in progressive techno territory, with a rich and funky bass line jacking these tunes to instantly danceable territory. On the plus side, each of the four tunes here has a totally unique hook – a little kitschy, but with an aggressive and Ninja Tune-y funking top layer. The opening tune is especially badass, tapping in to an IDM realm DMX Krew doesn’t always mess with to this extent; alas… like most of the other tracks, After about the three minute point, the song hits its bridge, and right when it should be winding down, Ed spins it back up, without much alteration. And because, post the hooks’ establishments, there’s not much else added – despite those hooks being amazing! – it’s easy to get a little restless if you’re not using this on the dancefloor.

The exception would be B-side’s U Ain’t Really Down, which has a building kind of ambient layer that enhances the funk and fun of its beat immensely, making the runtime feel earned.
