5 out of 5
Label: Breakin’ Records
Produced by: Ed DMX
Allowing that Breakin’ Records tends to be where Ed drops his more club-oriented jams, Computor Heart is delightful stuff: a funky low-end; crisp production; warm beats. Each cut here offers a slight tweak on that formula, building up to the layered, sci-fi dipped Infinity Drive to close things out. Befitting Ed’s style, the whole set has a bit of a retro vibe, but it’s never indulgent: this is one of his more flexible listens, where even a speedy BPM can be pretty chill thanks to the production style, while things are certainly still plenty funky enough to keep your body moving, if so desired.
The A-side maybe leans a bit more on the retro, with some samples and disco-ish flashes, with the B-side getting a bit crunchier. All throughout, Ed’s mastery of simplicity is on display, giving us just enough flourishes to a beat to really distinguish it, with the runtimes pretty perfect for allowing a song to really land and not overstay its welcome.
