SSBII – Eric Powell

3 out of 5

At least as entertaining as its predecessor, Satan’s Sodomy Baby 2 is – as was the first one – Powell’s outlet for uncensored social critiques, amped up to 11 and without any narrative consequence (as opposed to the times he does something similar in The Goon, which is amped up to only 9.5 with at least a minimal chance of narrative consequence).  Since this is a sequel and we’re banking on you, dear reader, being a Powell fan, there’s no need to take any time to justify SSB’s existence, and he can just be called into action by the most egregious of acts.  Which – as Satan and his disciples determine, while reviewing that society has fucked itself up without any assistance from Hell – happens to be Trump’s Republican nomination, securing this book as one of those “timely” romps that won’t mean much to a (hopefully) Trump-less future.  Along these lines, Eric manages to out himself as an old man with some dated references, but otherwise proceeds with the usual “everyone’s an *expletive* and every opinion including this one is stupid” rant, which we can all get behind because it’s a pretty easy one.  As long as you’re okay with dick jokes and whatnot, because that’s part of that shtick too.

SSB2 has a slightly upper hand by having this political focus, though, as it diverts Powell from falling back on perverse humor to run the show (a horse-riding SSB bursting out of Tom Brady’s ass is ridiculously over-the-top, but not solely a “huh huh butt” joke.  I think.), and I have always preferred my Goon stupid and goofy as opposed to fairly boring taboo baiting.

Anyway, though I’ve fallen into casual enjoyment territory with Powell, I dig that he’s wandered back to his self-publishing roots and still getting a kick out of drawing poop and boobs.
