Consistent in its averageness.
The third collection of the online DHP strips is about balanced half and half with standalone reads and ones which require some series context. The latter are, again, the more disinteresting of the bunch – even if you read whichever series – as the events seem pretty inconsequential.
The strips that read fine as one-offs (many of which were or are already webcomics) are generally fine, but the opposite problem ensues: With one-off gag strips, humor can be built upon by getting into a rhythm with any given collected strip. As this is just a scattershot sampling (with a wide gap between horror comics and comedy), such a rhythm is never established.
There are two Big Name highlights here: Mike Mignola’s Witchfinder and Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo. They’re still not required tales from either, but they are examples of telling a compelling, full story (art and words) in a few page limitation.
A couple extra sketches pad out this collection.
