Fighting American (#0) – Gordon Rennie, Various

4 our of 5

Something of a hype-up promo for Titan’s fun Fighting American revamp – Gordon Rennie’s time-traveling tale featuring Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s old school patriotic creation – this zero issue is timed oddly, appearing after the first issue of the regular series, but a worthwhile mini bit of bonus content.

One side features a letter from the offspring of the Kirby / Simon clan in support of the series, which is cool, with a reprint of the oddball origin of the hero, which, true to its creators, holds up well as dang fun and exciting.

On the flip side, we get a brief and light interview with writer Rennie and the series editor – which admittedly doesn’t offer much but also keeps the whole playful vibe of the project in tact – and some pencil art from the first issue plus thumbnails and sketches.

A star knocked off because I feel like pencil art – if you’re not doing a book that’s exclusively focused on the artist – should have accompanying script so you can see the adaptation process.  There are some adjustments between the thumbnails, but it still feels like a short sighted “extra.”
