The proper way to do this review would be to give you a rundown of the contents, offering opinions on each entry.
But, in a horribly dismissive fashion, I will summarize: None of these stories are particularly notable. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, moreso that this talent pool – writers and artists new to DC (but not necessarily new to comics, like Christopher Sebela and Emma Beeby, which feels sort of like a cheat to treat then like noobs) – is stuck with a bum rap of adapting continuity-steeped properties to short stories of 7ish pages. There’s really no good way to write a beginning, middle and end without it feeling trite or generic, which is why they decided to cheat by having all these tales occur somewhat en media res, with ‘to be continued’s. Whether or not that en media redness actually ties into current storylines I can’t say – I don’t read the source books – or maybe there’re more stories to come in an issue #2. Either way, its a valid method for ducking the triteness, though it doesn’t instantly render the stories all that interesting.
Which leads me to a secondary, and important, summary, reiterated from above: None of these stories are bad. They all look competent in terms of pacing and framing, sound on character, and do something distracting for a few pages without being obnoxiously flashy. I don’t think the point is to feature your new favorite writer’s most awesome work, but rather to open up the DC sandbox and let us see the results. Which is a cause I’m happy to support with some dollars.
…But it’s still not very memorable stuff (see: distraction descriptor above). Enjoy your three stars, new talent!
