A zine-y riff on RPG creature codexes, Eli Tripoli gathers a small handful of artistic friends to offer up some monster illustrations, complementing his own, and the accompanying descriptions and stats. Unfortunately, while there’s some good energy and definite creativity here, the excessive spelling errors and typography inconsistencies – maybe that’s a meta riff on how these books actually are? Having only a couple, I’m not sure – make this thing occasionally cringey to read. Tripoli’s blocky illustrations are charming on the smaller scale creations, but when he comes up with larger, more complex things, it’s hard to tell what you’re looking at.
Probably fun as a handout amongst friends, but even if you’re a fan of any of the guest artists, there’s not much here.
