Ceephax Acid Crew – Ceerial Port EP (reissue)

3 out of 5

Label: Weme Records

Produced by: Andy Jenkinson

While this feels almost hostile to its listener – abrupt edits in the tracks; repetition and BPM suited more for a mid-night dancefloor than an EP you milk some listens out of – Andy Jenkinson’s endless repertoire of quality acid jams starts to take shape in the middle of the A-side, then fully (as things open up a bit more) on the B-side. This isn’t necessarily out of line with the Ceephax output, which is surely damn frequent enough to merit a mix of experimentation with more fleshed out tracks, but it feels odd to kick things off that way; for hardened acid heads, who maybe grew up on the scene in the 90s when things – from my perspective – were much more insular and sweaty, I can see how this is more appealing, but I admittedly prefer my CAC with a bit more breathing room.

However, the beats themselves are definitely killer, and something like Acid Whorl starts to feel more fun than punishing. Once you flip the EP over, there’s a bit more humor and groove, allowing your head to bob and not jerk; then there’s the 7+ minute Acid Surf Dream, which is very accurately named, and rounds out the B-side as being worth the more difficult A-side.
