There are tons of arguments here about whether or not all film has merit, and that’s some of what Vogel spoke to in the S&Man interview. That’s too broad of a topic to address here. I offer … my logic in arriving at my feelings regarding the movies, that I can understand the need for the niche, but that shitty movies are still shitty movies.
Migrating Netflix reviews:
I understand this is a kid’s movie. I get that. But director Guillermo del Toro (I mean, *ahem* Troy Nixey) has flirted with the themes in “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” enough that I was expecting something more affecting than what zips by on the screen for 90 minutes. Alas, del Toro’s production stamp is all over the movie, but poor sound mixing and undercut tension makes this a disappointing view, better as a made-for-TV movie as was the original on which it was based…

I FIND YOUR CYNICISM PALATABLE
The kids loved Dawn of the Dead, and were equally enthused about 300. Watchmen predictably split comic fans, but most people seemed to at least agree that it was an immense undertaking that was more successful than not. But before we talk about Sucker Punch, let’s mention the jewel of the Snyder collection: Legend of the Guardians. … My love for that film meant that Snyder had me: I would gladly give myself over to his slo-mo extended love scenes.
Thus: when the trailers for Sucker Punch started making the rounds, my heart was a’flutter and I felt that here was ol’ Zacky unleashed. No more comic scripts to live up to, and some proven dollars under his belt to go banana nuts on visuals. And I know many people were in the same boat as me. AND YET: these motherfuckers jumped overboard. Why? …
‘Series 7’ has remained surprisingly fresh considering its a reality-TV movie that came out in 2001, right at the beginning of the burst of reality TV. And interestingly, it’s gotten better. We’ve seen the “death as entertainment” theme in movies before, and … Years later, we’ve seen all of this on TV now. Maybe not the death, but that cheesy editing style and over-dramatic presentation is the truth, and my saturation to it allowed me to see this not as commentary, but just a view: if this happens, this is what it would look and sound like…

What to say about these types of films? This is more than a curiosity rental, for sure. You’re checking this out because you like cheesy kung-fu action, or 70sish-era action in general. If you’re a genre fan, there’s good fun here. Not top of the line, of course, but you’ve seen that stuff already…
PEOPLE WHO BUY BUDGET PACK DVDS ALWAYS READ MY REVIEWS
Listen, I get it – this movie is not for me. It’s not about dialogue, it’s not about characterization. It’s about cars and driving scenes. Even taken on those merits alone, the movie seems lacking. True enough – I know nothing of cars. Regardless, I get the sense that the people involved with this movie don’t know much either, beyond the notion that only sexy people and/or people who speak Spanish should drive cars that are rigged with Nitro boosts and painted in flourescent colors…
Okay. Ready? The only Bond films I have seen prior to this one feature Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig. Even though I am a filmy kind of guy (Read: both covered in film and interested in film), Bond has never held much appeal to me. Bear that in mind. Regardless, I do try to watch any given film with the notion that I might not be the target demographic.
Even with that notion planted firmly in my cheek, I have to assume that this was a bad Bond movie…
For a movie that has no set narration and seems to start sort of nowhere and end of sort of somewhere, this is an incredibly compelling documentary.
