Atmosphere featuring deM atlaS – Finer Things

4 out of 5

Label: Rhymesayers

Produced by: Atmosphere

The live jazz / funk instrumentation on this is just catchy as all hell, making the instrumental B-side of the single absolutely worthwhile. This also serves as a great middleground for Slug’s playful variation on his delivery – used when Ant kicks up a punkier beat – and deM atlaS’ scratchy and scrappy take on soulful singing.

Alas, we are at an era where Slug’s lyrics are occasionally on autopilot, and the ‘Finer Things’ concept here, though tip-toeing into some deeper meanings, is mostly focused on a lovey-doveyness-sure-feels-good narrative, which allows Mr. Daly to slip into sillier rhymes; so it’s a fantastic beat and composition, but a fairly lightweight track.

For a single, though, that’s not a bad mix at all.
