The third in a series of EPs dedicated to the Amen break – partially responsible for the nom de plume here employed by Luke Vibert – the trio of tracks here advertise their BPM up front, which gives you a sense of the intention: to make you dance. And since it’s Vibert, there’s a certain amount of flashiness involved in that, trading in a typically grimey bass sound and lots of odd / humorous flavor samples. On (many) occasions, including as part of this series, that flashiness of Vibert’s rubs me the wrong way; on this third volume, though, the A-side tunes have a bit more of a groove to them; room to breathe. The samples feel like part of the flow instead of silly needle drops, and Vibert makes unleashing his drilling flourishes a bit of a build up instead of going all-out. The songs are fun, and feel fully constructed as songs.
B-side’s Junglebunny is a bit of a mix – it’s fairly abstract in its beat construction, which is a nice change, but at a certain point it switches over into maximum Vibert-style, and gets kind of repetitive for my tastes, inclusive of a hard stop when the song could end, but Luke just keeps it going. (Although kudos for the fade-out fakeout when the sole drum beat keeps ticking – pretty cool, Vibert.)
