Cripes. The first of three “lemme tell ya ’bout acid” EPs from Ceephax Acid Crew, this one appropriately subtitled ‘Pandemonium,’ aptly describing the non-stop, heartracing beat that runs through both sides. What’s great about this stuff, and why Ceephax is a badass at acid, is that he can whip out some undeniable rave-ups – things designed to kill you on the dancefloor – and yet inject an incredible amount of personality along the way. Even on the B-side, when the beats extend to 6 and 7 minutes, the way he massages the rhythm with different synth layers, while never interrupting the flow, is badass stuff. Some of our big names in the electro scene – Richard D. James, for example – toss their hat into the acid ring now and then, and I gotta say, it’s not always as successful as what CAC can do, and what he very much does here.
This is pretty much hard across the board, but each song is distinct, kicking off with softer or harsher sounds before the beat is mixed higher up and the track just lets loose. Brilliant, brilliant acid house.
